Completed Project | Classroom Dojo

I have installed an android app called classroom Dojo to replace a checkmark system that worked so well at my last placement! I found it was a great way to track behaviours, but you need to stay on top of it or the kids won't leave you alone! We had some great prizes as the end of my term and the kids saw their hardwork pay off. When I am done writing my full post about this unit you can check it out here!
Completed Project | Fractions in Action

Year 4 and 5 starts off with fractions, but with two completely different approaches. Check out some of the manipulatives I have used in the past and a really neat gumball assignment the students enjoyed. I will be sure to upload some of the Problem of the Day (POTD) examples so you can see how our students were finding the answers!
Completed Project | Respect AAA

What a throw back to an unforgetable AAA day I did with the lovely student teachers at Arthur Day Middle School. Building the teepee was a challange, but the PD day was a great success! For teachers ineeding to create a great social studies lesson on short notice check out the "Living with the buffalo" kit from the Manitoba Education Library.

Completed Project | Get Lit Up
To round out our unit on perspective I wanted to take a look at the more scientific side of things. Ss of 229 knew we use lights such as the sun and lightbulbs every day, but we were in the dark about how it all worked. You can even say it was an illuminating experience! Terrible dad puns aside, I had a blast messing with mirrors, creating superhero symbols, shooting lasers, and building kaledioscopes! To find out more check out my blog for updates!
I just finished updating this 05/28/17!
Completed Project | Fatty Legs
With the last residential school in Canada closing in 1996. I asked the students of 229
"Since we closed it down, all the problems between the GoC and the Aboriginal people are over, right?"
After getting a earful from the very vocal and strongly opinionated grade 4s, we dug deeper into the meaning of perspective by exploring Fatty Legs by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton.
It was a great chance to hear the perspective of a survivor of residential schools while practicing our skills as readers and writers! We created a perspective treasure box and filled it with items that represented Margret's experience!

On-Going Project | If You're Not From the Inner City
Inspired by the beautiful poetry of Canadian author David Bouchard, If You're Not From the Praries was the spark the students of 229 needed to ignite their thinking about our perspective unit.
In this writing project the students wrote with a purpose of showing their views from one of the most misunderstood neighbourhoods in Winnipeg. After spending days debating what makes the innercity unique we used the writer's process to create a collection of touching views through their eyes.
They also did it for a real audience! Some wanted to make their parents proud and other were thinking of the newly arrived families moving into the area. If you are not a part of the innercity you don't know pride. You can't know pride.
There definitely no shortage of it in the student's writing.
Note: I am in the process of creating a seperate page for student work. If you don't see your work here, i'll have it posted soon!
